The Rules of Olympic Trampolining
Trampolining officially became an Olympic event during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games allowing a new generation of athletes to jump higher and further than ever before. However if you are regular user of Trampolines, you may not be aware of the differences between regular trampolining competitions and Olympic trampolining.
Firstly, in the Olympic Games the type of Trampoline used is very specific. The Olympic Trampoline is a a metal framed type, surrounding a nylon spring bed which is 3 feet, 9 inches off the ground. Mats are laid on both sides should the gymnast fall, but as it is 16 feet 6 inches long by 9 feet 6 inches wide, this is unlikely, especially considering their skill.
Olympic Trampoliners are in teams of six and feature both female or male (as there are separate competitions for each sex), but they have to be at least 18 years old.
In the first round of Olympic trampolining, each gymnast performs a compulsory and voluntary routine that features ten separate skills. The eight best gymnasts are then moved on to the final round, where they complete an individual routine. It is important to remember that the scores from the first round are not carried over, but the order for the final round is based on the first round rankings. Therefore the top ranked gymnast has the advantage of going last in the final round. The top three scores then receive the gold, silver and bronze medals.
