Lottery cash brings trampoline smiles to Dumbarton

GIRLS at Dumbarton Academy are now enjoying trampolining classes at the school thanks to lottery cash organised by PE teacher John Hammond and Active Schools Co-ordinator Claire Gregory.

The two full-size trampolines currently allow for two sessions every week for the girls, but the idea behind getting the equipment was to help improve the fitness of the secondary school girls. John was given the idea of applying for funding for the trampolines after speaking with a colleague at another school.

All staff have now been trained in the first stage of the activity and will now take part in level two within the next few weeks. This will allow them to teach more advanced sequences including somersaults. In the meantime, the girls attending the sessions are enjoying learning new skills while keeping fit.

John told the Lennox Herald: “The positive result of all this hard work is that we currently have two lunchtime clubs running with around 40 pupils involved over the two days.” At present, the club is only open to first to third year girls, but the plan is to open it up to senior pupils and boys. John added: “The young people of Dumbarton Academy have approached the activity with enthusiasm and have already shown high levels of skill, which is encouraging. A few members of staff have also ventured onto the trampolines with a similar result, and regardless of ability or age the result is always the same – big smiles.”
